The Darkside of Sound - How Frequencies can Harm instead of Heal

It was date night. The first time in a good long while when James and I had some time to get out of the house and do something fun :-). “Let’s go to the movies!!” we shouted! We love movies on the big screen and hadn’t been since pre-covid… I thought all day about snuggling with my honey, watching a good story in the dark. How great is that?? Saturday night, here we come!

We got there just in time for the trailers. We love trailers!! Found two comfy lounge seats, smiled at each other and sat back for the show.

First trailer started. Whoa.I had not counted on the volume of sound. It was deafening. Okay, I thought. Trailers are always louder than the main attraction. I squirmed through all the trailers. It was unbearably uncomfortable, it hurt my ears. Trailers over. Movie begins. But … Now the sound actually got LOUDER.

Blast after blast of supersonic sized speakers ratcheted up to the max in complete surround sound. It was not only deafening… it was physically painful for me. After one particularly big boom, I felt like I was being gut punched in the solar plexus. I turned to James. “Honey, I don’t know if I can do this.” He offered me tissues to stuff into my ears, but tissues were useless. It was beyond just my hearing. The sound was permeating my body. I could feel it in my bones, my skin, my muscles.

At one point, I felt my heart constrict. I actually thought I was having a heart experience. That’s impossible, though. I just had a stellar physical. In that moment, I checked inside and knew without a shadow of a doubt that sitting through the film was bad for my health. I looked at James and said, "Honey, I am really sorry but I cannot do this. I have to leave right now." We got up and left and decided to drive straight home.

In the blessed silence of the car, I thought I would recover quickly. But here’s the kicker …  It took nearly TWELVE hours for my energy to recalibrate. Twelve hours. Seriously. My energy field felt shredded. Like someone had come in and taken a sledgehammer to it. Before going to bed, I did everything I knew to do. I went straight for my tools: meditation, breathwork, a little bit of bowls with singing, yoga. I did my best to clear out all the crazy caca that had blasted into my personal field plus all the emotions from the other people in the theater … their reactivity to the sound, the story, whatever was going on in their lives. Cleanse, clear, clean it all out.

By the middle of the next afternoon, I was back to being happy Ashana again.

Wow. 10-minutes of modern movie theater surround sound and 12 hours of repair and regeneration just to get back to homeostasis again.

I am immensely grateful that at this point in my life, I have the awareness to know when a situation is not healthy for me. I'm also grateful for my self-care toolkit that helps me take care of myself when something goes sideways. But that being said, I still wonder about all the people in the theater who stayed until the end. What about the millions and millions of people who go to movies, big rock concerts and huge public events where the sound is pumping out in crazy high decibels… nevermind the message that is being delivered along the way (but that’s another story).

Please, please know this. Sound is POWERFUL. Its effect is far greater than most people realize. When brought up to unnatural levels it can literally create a tear in your energy field. This kind of sound is not life-affirming. It is toxic sound and can harm your health and wellbeing. There are actually studies that show that long-term noise exposure exponentially increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, stress and anxiety, cognitive disorders, insomnia, and even diabetes.

If you are reading this, you know how healing sound can be. Imagine listening to a cascade of birdsong as it floats through the air, or the rhythmic crash of waves along the beach. Raindrops on the roof, or laughter among friends. These are healing sounds. They increase your endorphins, help your body to relax and boost your immune system. These are sounds that are good for your health.

Visionary leader and voice alchemist Steward Pearce - Master of Voice tells us that….

“... literally within the core of sound lies the blueprint of creation: of the Cosmos, of the Planet, of your life, and all of sentient life.”

Sound is a blessing. It holds a key to our health, our well-being, our ability to connect with and feel all of consciousness. Through high vibrational healing frequencies, we can create coherence with all of life. We can align with our souls through sound. We can recalibrate, restore and renew ourselves… down to the DNA, with loving, mindful sound.

Aaaaaannnnndddd …. we can also destroy ourselves with sound. Little by little, bit by bit. The Tibetans knew the power of sound to destroy and they were very, very careful about using it.

Here is my prayer for you today: Take inventory. Take care of the sounds in your life. Nourish yourself with healing, life-affirming sound. Let your “surround sound” be sounds of nature, beautiful music, of mantra and chanting. Let it be of creation that supports us being the best humans we can and great caretakers of Mother Earth.

Let your sounds be the frequencies of Love and the whispers of Light.

I have a new life affirming, soul empowering mantra to help heal body, mind, spirit and our relationship with the earth that was just released last week called Om Apadamapa. You can watch the stunning music video here, or by clicking the album cover. And if you want to chant along with me, click here to watch the lyric video (it’s a solar-powered energy healing masterpiece!).

Finally, check out my new Spotify Playlist called Resonance that I created featuring my favorite Sacred Mantra Music (perfect to play for those times when you need to recalibrate your energy with some power packed healing sound) by clicking here

Blessings and love to you all.

On waves of healing sound.
